David Hockney Talks About Painting Routine

Here Hockney talks about his work, where he does it, when he does it and how he comes up with his ideas.

David Hockney

David Hockney known for his run among strange and crazy artistic circles. Hes an artist that has always enjoyed success and praise, facing little to no hardship in his career unlike other artists.
David Hockney was born on July 9, 1937, in Bradford, England, to Laura and Kenneth Hockney.
Hockney likes to work with photography, or, more precisely, photocollage, where  he get several pictures of one object from different angles and creates a collage of images of that single image.


Its hard to explain so here are some examples,

Here are some of Hockney's photo collages we can clearly see how all of these collages are extremly abstract and unique in way that makes them seem odd but nice pieces of work, each single photo is bold and expressive whether its a single ear or just the bow strap on her shirt, Hockney gets every last feature into the picture while giving it all equal importance, no one picture is on top or over shadowing the rest this balance between diversity and similarity is what makes Hockney's colleges so instresting.

Another piece by Hockney this particular picture by Hockney has a heavy semotic approach, The picture is simply two squares conjointed by a few stiches and a hand this sign is
a relation to love, being together, attachment also the colours suggest passion or angry.

It also signifies equality as they aren't both the same coloured square but yet different shades of red one being bright the other being very close to purple, also this is backed up with the text "we 2 boys together clinging", this simplistic picture is trying to convey the meaning of brotherly love wether that be with in the same race or not.

The sign of the hand is we can still hold on as the purple square could be also seen as depression as its a dark colour which relates to sadness and the red square which is bright red and has a hand to hold the purple one. It's a simple representation of what soicety doesnt promote or maybe allow is some sense.

Invader

One of  the many artists we have looked at is Invader, a French street artist born in 1969 he pastes up characters from and inspired by the Space Invaders game, made up of small coloured square tiles that form a mosaic. He does this in cities across the world, then documents this as an "Invasion", with books and maps of where to find each invader.

One of the more prominent places where the mosaics have been installed is on the Hollywood Sign. The first was placed on the letter D on December 31, 1999. During further trips to Los Angeles, Invader has placed mosaics on the 8 other letters of the sign.
Invader also works on another project that he titles "Rubikcubism", which consists making artworks made of Rubik's Cubes. Invader has had solo exhibitions at art galleries in Paris, Osaka, Melbourne, Los Angeles, New York City, and London.

His work is made through simple shapes yet he does them with a lot of detail ( mainly with toning and positioning). Some of his work in public players around europe.

 Invader's represented Space Invaders characters are all very simplistic and are basicly just a few coloured squares with a coloured background, his work my not seem to inpressive at first but his real 'art' is his portraits of people done with a few simple primary colours and squares.

Pixel Art

Pixel is a form of Digital Art created with small squares on a grided page or represented as simple cubes in real life art. The images are edited to pixel level which is when they are minimized and drawn individualy with 1x1 squares. Pixel Art is known as a modern form of art and has been for the last 10 - 15 years is used in a wide range of media such as videos, video games, electronic toys, old phones and computers, we had to explore different types of Pixel Art by different artists such as Invader who created a stunning portait of a mans face, with just Rubix cubes!!!

                               

His use of basic colours to create such a detailed picture are just mind blowing, the bright reds and bold blues exaggerate the facial features in his face which really make it stand out. Invader likes to use bold colours to catch his audiences attention, pushing it right in their face.

Mario from "Super Mario Brothers"

In uses a well known retro game character in his artwork called "Mario" and represents him almost exactly like he was in the old retro Snes games he used to be featured in.

We can see the similar use of bold between Invader's work and Mario's outfit. Another difference is there is no tonal shading which is common in most old retro games and game characters because everything back then was very 'simple', but Invader's used simple colours to make it appear shaded.






 Another type of Pixel Art is 8-Bit Art which just like pixel art it simplifys pictures into single pixel colours, this is mostly used in games and music, normally with game charaters.
